North Island Faces Severe Weather, Power Outages Persist
Severe weather has continued to impact the North Island of New Zealand, leading to power outages and disruptions across several regions. On Tuesday morning, strong wind warnings in northern and central areas expired, but multiple locations remained under threat from ongoing adverse weather conditions. Key areas affected include the Kapiti Coast, where Electra reported power cuts impacting Paekakariki, Foxton, and Shannon.
In addition, Buller Electricity Ltd indicated that power was out in Karamea, Little Wanganui, and Karamea Bluff on the South Island’s West Coast. According to MetService, heavy rain and robust south-east gales are forecast to persist, particularly affecting central New Zealand. A strong wind warning is currently in place for Marlborough Sounds, Nelson, and the West Coast north of Fox Glacier until 14:00, with Wellington under a wind watch until 21:00. Heavy rain watches are also active for the Tararua District, Wairarapa, and the Kaikoura Coast.
Tauranga City Council has cancelled all five of its community New Year’s Eve events due to the poor weather forecast. The council cited weather reports predicting heavy rain and strong winds during event set-up, which are likely to continue into Wednesday. Despite the cancellations, the council expressed hope that fireworks displays could still occur from various locations around the city on New Year’s Eve.
Clean-Up Efforts Underway
The adverse weather has caused significant damage in many parts of the South Island, with strong winds bringing down trees overnight. Fire and Emergency New Zealand reported that State Highway 7 over the Rahu Saddle, between Reefton and Springs Junction, was affected by fallen trees. State Highway 6 also experienced similar issues, particularly through the Whangamoa Hills between Nelson and Blenheim.
Firefighters have responded to over 140 weather-related incidents across the North Island, including Auckland, Northland, Waikato, and the Bay of Plenty. PowerCo reported that hundreds of properties remain without power, particularly north of Whanganui, and in the areas surrounding Palmerston North and Feilding.
Campground managers across the North Island are now hoping for improved weather as they approach the New Year. The wild weather on Monday disrupted many campers, causing power outages and downed trees. In Auckland, a roof was torn off an unoccupied house in Hillsborough, prompting fire crews to respond to more than 100 weather-related calls.
Yvette Davey, manager of Kūaotunu Campground on the Coromandel Peninsula, noted that the weather caused some disruption on Monday. “We have had a couple of campers whose tents were destroyed, so they had to go home. Other than that, people are hunkering down; it has settled down here,” she said.
Leanne Mills, owner of Long Bay Motor Camp in Coromandel, added that campers have not been overly discouraged by the weather. “We’ve had a bit of rain, but we’ve been lucky. Campers have just used it as a crash day—just chill out, read a book, sleep,” she explained. Mills emphasized the continued support from regulars, noting that most are Kiwis who return year after year regardless of the weather.
Festivalgoers planning to attend New Year’s events, such as Rhythm and Vines in Gisborne, have been warned to remain cautious on the roads due to the ongoing severe weather conditions.
