Otago Polytechnic Partners with Hunan Institute to Educate 300 Students
Otago Polytechnic has entered into a partnership with the Hunan Institute of Engineering to educate approximately 300 students annually in China. The agreement was formalized during the **2025 China Annual Conference and Expo for International Education**, marking a significant step towards enhancing the polytechnic’s presence in the region.
According to Max Sims, the deputy executive director of operations at Otago Polytechnic, this collaboration allows students to pursue three distinct programs: Bachelor of Engineering Technology, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and Bachelor of Information Technology. Under this arrangement, students will be enrolled within Otago Polytechnic’s academic framework throughout their four-year studies. The inaugural cohort is set to commence in **September 2025**.
The initiative also includes provisions for polytechnic tutors to travel to China, ensuring that students receive quality instruction consistent with Otago Polytechnic’s standards. By the end of the fourth year, the joint institute is expected to accommodate around **1,200 students**.
The initial agreement spans a period of **10 years**, reflecting both institutions’ commitment to fostering a long-term educational partnership. Mr. Sims emphasized that this collaboration not only strengthens Otago Polytechnic’s foothold in central China but also provides pathways for Chinese students to pursue further studies in New Zealand. He stated, “This partnership strengthens Otago Polytechnic’s presence in central China, provides pathways for Chinese students to continue their studies in New Zealand and supports our long-term international growth strategy.”
This strategic move aligns with Otago Polytechnic’s broader international growth strategy, enhancing educational opportunities for students in both New Zealand and China. As global demand for skilled professionals continues to rise, initiatives like this one play a crucial role in addressing educational gaps and fostering international collaboration in higher education.
