Phillips Shines as Volts Defeat Stags by 41 Runs in Super Smash
The Otago Volts secured a convincing victory over the Central Stags, winning by 41 runs in a Super Smash match held in Alexandra on March 15, 2024. The standout performance came from Glenn Phillips, who showcased his batting prowess with an impressive unbeaten score of 90 runs off just 48 balls. This victory reinforces the Volts’ strong position in the tournament as they aim for T20 success.
The Volts, led by captain Luke Georgeson, set a formidable target of 193 runs after winning the toss and opting to bat first. The innings began with a promising start from Llew Johnson and Jamal Todd. Johnson contributed a quick-fire 13 runs off only 9 balls, while Todd followed up his recent half-century with a dynamic 32 runs from 16 balls. The Volts were in a healthy position at 80 for 3 when Phillips took to the crease.
Phillips initially adopted a cautious approach, setting the stage for an explosive finish. He reached his half-century in just 32 balls and accelerated as the innings progressed. During the 17th over, he struck Toby Findlay for a sequence of boundaries, hitting 4, 6, 4, and 4 in consecutive deliveries. The crowd erupted as Phillips then demonstrated his versatility by switching to a left-handed grip, showcasing a remarkable shot off former teammate Dean Foxcroft.
In the final over, Phillips executed a stunning left-handed shot over cover off off-spinner Jayden Lennox, further solidifying his exceptional performance. Reflecting on the innings, Phillips stated, “A couple of partnerships set us up… and to finish it off nicely was good,” in an interview with TVNZ.
The Stags began their chase with determination, particularly through Will Young, who made a strong impression with a score of 40 runs off 19 balls. Young hit three sixes and five fours before falling to Georgeson. At 87 for 2 after ten overs, the Stags appeared to be on track, but the loss of Young and Foxcroft, both dismissed for 24 runs, stalled their momentum.
Georgeson’s bowling proved decisive, as he delivered an outstanding performance with figures of 4 wickets for 23 runs in his four overs. Danru Ferns supported well with a contribution of 2 for 24. The Stags ultimately finished their innings at 152 for 8, falling short of the target despite their efforts.
With Phillips set to depart for India with the Black Caps, he expressed confidence in his team’s capabilities moving forward. “The guys are learning really fast,” he noted. “There’s a great crew here with a lot of power and a lot of effort with the ball, and everyone gives everything in the field. I think they’ve got everything they need to move forward.”
As the Volts look ahead to the remainder of their T20 campaign, they will undoubtedly feel bolstered by this commanding performance, setting the stage for an exciting season.
