A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the homicide of an Auckland man in Mt Wellington on December 5, 2023. The suspect faces charges of murder and other related offences, with an appearance scheduled at the Auckland District Court later today.

Police continue to investigate the incident, which occurred in the early afternoon when the victim arrived at a medical centre on Lunn Avenue at approximately 12:15 PM. He had suffered critical injuries from an attack involving a sharp object on Harris Road. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries at Auckland City Hospital later that same day.

Investigation Underway

Detective Inspector Scott Beard of the Auckland City Police Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) expressed concern about the violence of the incident, particularly given the time of day. He stated, “The violence, especially at that time of day, is concerning, and we’ve dedicated a large number of resources to the investigation in order to track down those responsible.”

According to police, additional suspects remain at large. The investigation team is actively pursuing leads, conducting area canvasses in the vicinity of the crime scene and around Lunn Avenue, Ellerslie, where the offenders’ vehicle, a blue Nissan March, was discovered.

Beard noted that a significant portion of the investigation will rely on CCTV footage, and he called for witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage from Harris Road or Lunn Avenue around the time of the incident to come forward.

Community Engagement and Next Steps

The police are appealing to the community for assistance. Beard acknowledged the many questions residents may have regarding the events, assuring them that the police are working diligently to find answers. “Detectives are pursuing every lead available to us,” he emphasized.

Anyone with information can report it online or contact the police at 105, citing case reference number 251205/6107. Anonymous tips can also be provided through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
