Police Investigate Suspicious Approach to Young Girl in Whakatu

Parents in Hawke’s Bay are being advised to remain vigilant following a concerning incident involving a young girl in Whakatu, near Hastings, on the afternoon of March 14, 2024. According to reports from RNZ, a man approached the girl while she was walking home around 15:15 local time. This interaction has prompted Hastings police to launch an investigation into the incident.
Detective Sergeant Karli Whiu of Hastings Police described the situation as a “suspicious approach.” Authorities have expressed their concern regarding the safety of children in the area. The girl managed to respond appropriately, avoiding further interaction with the man and promptly informing her caregivers about the encounter.
In a statement, Whiu commended the girl’s actions, saying, “We acknowledge the girl who has done the right thing by avoiding the man, making her way home, and telling her caregivers.” This proactive response highlights the importance of children knowing how to react in potentially dangerous situations.
While the incident may unsettle the community, Whiu emphasized the need for parents to stay alert without succumbing to fear. “We ask parents to be alert, not alarmed,” she stated. The police are encouraging caregivers to engage in discussions with children about recognizing and responding to inappropriate or uncomfortable situations.
As part of the investigation, local authorities are reviewing CCTV and dashcam footage from the Whakatu area. Police have urged anyone who may have observed suspicious activity to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
The incident serves as a reminder for parents and guardians to educate children on safety measures and the importance of reporting any suspicious encounters. Through these conversations, children can develop a better understanding of what makes them feel unsafe and learn how to act decisively in such situations.
The Hastings police continue to monitor the situation closely, and community members are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings as the investigation unfolds.
