Police Minister Backs Removal of McSkimming’s Medals After Guilty Plea

Police Minister Mark Mitchell has expressed his support for stripping former Deputy Police Commissioner Jevon McSkimming of his service medals following his guilty pleas related to the possession of child exploitation material. McSkimming resigned in May 2023 after objectionable content was discovered on his work devices earlier in the year.

In an interview with Herald NOW, Mitchell stated, “I think that’s the right thing to do when you look at his behaviour.” His stance comes after McSkimming pleaded guilty to three charges of possessing objectionable images, which included a shocking total of 2,945 photos classified as child exploitation material and bestiality.

Police Commissioner Recommends Medal Removal

Following the guilty plea, Police Commissioner Richard Chambers informed staff via a memo that he had recommended the removal of McSkimming’s long service and conduct medal, along with any clasps he had earned during his tenure. Chambers also indicated plans to reissue awards that had been signed by McSkimming while he served in the role as the nation’s second-highest police official.

The scandal has placed the New Zealand Police in a challenging position, especially after an audit revealed that other staff members had also been bypassing police technology controls to access objectionable material. Mitchell expressed his sympathy for the dedicated officers who “turn up to work every day” and contribute to the force, emphasizing the need to address McSkimming’s actions as they “reflect badly on police.”

Details of McSkimming’s Offending Revealed

Before his resignation, McSkimming had already been suspended and under investigation since December 2022 on separate allegations. Following his court plea, further details of his actions were made public. Reports indicate that McSkimming had confided in colleagues about his upbringing, stating, “he grew up in a house where pornography was normal.”

He reportedly elaborated to another coworker that over the years, he required various types of pornography to experience any feelings, leading to an escalation in his behavior.

The New Zealand Police are now tasked with restoring public confidence in their integrity, while the ramifications of McSkimming’s actions continue to unfold. As this situation develops, the focus remains on ensuring that such breaches of conduct are addressed appropriately within the force.
