Police Officer Injured, Suspect Killed in Waikato Incident
An emergency situation unfolded in Waikato, New Zealand, early on September 8, 2023, when a police officer sustained serious injuries, and a suspect was shot dead during an alleged burglary. The incident occurred around 02:30 at a commercial property in Waitomo, prompting a significant police response.
According to a statement from the Waikato Police, officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of a burglary. During the response, a confrontation ensued that resulted in both the suspect and the police officer being shot. The suspect received immediate first aid but was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured officer was subsequently transported to hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
Police have initiated a large-scale operation in the area and have requested that both media and the public respect the cordons in place. These measures aim to ensure the safety of all involved and to facilitate ongoing investigations.
The shooting appears to be linked to the long-standing search for Tom Phillips, a man from Marokopa who has evaded authorities since January 2020. Reports indicate that Phillips is a suspect in the alleged ram-raid of the PGG Wrightson store located in Piopio. Another individual is believed to be in custody in connection with this incident.
At this point, police have not confirmed whether the events of the morning are directly connected to the search for Phillips. The investigation remains active, and authorities continue to gather information and evidence from the scene.
Further updates will follow as the situation develops, and police conduct a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding this incident.
