Police Warn of Rising Copper Theft Threatening Safety

Police in New Zealand have issued a warning regarding a surge in copper thefts from powerlines, which pose significant safety risks to the public. Over recent months, authorities have noted an increase in incidents that disrupt essential services and leave powerlines exposed.

Acting Detective Sergeant Steph Trengrove emphasized the dangers of these thefts during a recent statement. He highlighted that disruptions in power supply not only inconvenience residents but also create serious hazards. “A number of these incidents have led to power outages on affected streets, and often powerlines are left exposed,” Trengrove said.

While no serious injuries have been reported thus far, Trengrove cautioned that the potential for severe harm or even fatalities is high if this trend continues. “There is a very high chance that serious injury or death will occur if this activity continues,” he added.

Local police are appealing to the community for assistance in identifying and locating the individuals involved in these thefts. The areas most affected include McLeans Island, West Melton, Dallington, Avondale, Brooklands, and Spencerville. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity they may observe.

Trengrove encouraged residents to keep an eye and an ear out for unusual sounds or behaviors near power infrastructure. “Members of the public should also be aware of the dangers behind exposed or damaged wires,” he cautioned. Residents are advised not to approach any exposed wires and to call Orion, the local utility company, at 0800 363 9898 if they encounter such situations.

In the event of witnessing suspicious activity around power poles and lines, police urge the public to call 111 immediately. If the activity has already occurred, individuals should report it using 105.
