A rāhui has been established on Taranaki Maunga following a tragic incident in which a person lost their life. The individual was part of a group that became separated during their visit to the mountain on March 12, 2024. Around 13:00 local time, a member of the group dialed 111 to report the missing person. Sadly, authorities confirmed that the individual was found deceased shortly after 17:00 the same day.

In response to the incident, local iwi, including Ngāruahine and Taranaki Iwi, expressed their sorrow through a Facebook post. They highlighted the importance of cultural practices by placing a rāhui on the Maunga to honour the deceased and uphold traditional customs. The post emphasized the need for respect and care for the departed and their family.

Details of the Rāhui and Search Efforts

The rāhui has been implemented over a specific area within Te Papakura o Taranaki, extending from the Brames Falls track in the west to the Kaūpokonui River. Elders, or kaumātua, have stated that the rāhui is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice. They have urged all visitors to the Maunga to respect this sacred period as the community comes together to mourn.

Chris Hall, the base manager for the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter, reported that the helicopter was deployed to assist in the search and recovery operation. Search and rescue teams were dropped off at the mountain, and it took them five hours to locate the body. Unfortunately, deteriorating weather conditions, including clouds, wind, and rain, hindered efforts to lift the body from the mountain. Hall noted, “It was too turbulent to attempt to winch them out.”

On March 13, the police announced that the public should expect an increased presence in the area as Land Search and Rescue continued their efforts to retrieve the body. The community remains united in their grief, and the imposition of the rāhui serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and respect in such outdoor pursuits.
