Ranveer Singh Apologizes After Controversial Performance at IFFI
Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has publicly apologized following backlash over a controversial performance at the International Film Festival of Goa (IFFI). During the festival, Singh attempted to recreate a scene from Kantara: Chapter 1, but referred to a revered deity as a “female ghost,” which sparked outrage among viewers and social media users who felt their religious sentiments were disrespected.
In response to the criticism, Singh took to Instagram to clarify his intentions and express remorse. He stated, “My intention was to highlight Rishab Shetty’s performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene the way he did, for which he has my utmost admiration.” Singh emphasized his respect for various cultures and traditions in India, adding, “If I have hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred during the closing ceremony of IFFI 2025, where Singh enacted an iconic climax performance from Kantara: Chapter 1. While performing, he mistakenly referred to the daiva Chavundi as a “female ghost” and jokingly asked the audience if they would like to see him in Kantara 3. His comments quickly drew criticism, leading to discussions about the importance of cultural sensitivity in performances.
Following the incident, on December 1, 2025, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) lodged a formal complaint against Singh. In a public statement, the organization demanded a public apology and called for Singh to refrain from making similar remarks in the future. They also encouraged their supporters to protest in a “peaceful and lawful manner.”
Upcoming Projects Amid the Controversy
Despite the ongoing controversy, Singh is preparing for the release of his upcoming film Dhurandhar, which boasts an ensemble cast that includes Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, and R. Madhavan. Directed by Aditya Dhar, the film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 5, 2025.
Singh’s apology and the ensuing conversation about cultural respect highlight the complex relationship between performance art and audience sensitivity, a topic that continues to resonate in the entertainment industry.
