Serious Injuries Reported After Ferris Wheel Incident in Christchurch
Two men sustained serious injuries after falling from a Ferris wheel at the Rolling Meadows music festival in Christchurch on March 16, 2024. The incident occurred around 02:10 when the men, reportedly in a swinging bucket, fell as the ride was being stopped. According to the New Zealand Herald, both individuals were transported to Christchurch Hospital in serious condition.
Witnesses indicated that the men were advised to stop swinging the bucket just before the incident took place. As the ride operator initiated the unloading process, the bucket tipped, resulting in the fall. Phil Anderson, director of Event Hire, provided this account to the media, emphasizing the sudden nature of the event.
Investigation and Safety Measures Underway
In the wake of the incident, WorkSafe New Zealand has been notified and is expected to conduct a thorough investigation. An independent engineer will perform a full technical review of the Ferris wheel to determine the cause of the accident.
