Snowfall Impacts Travel in Mackenzie Basin and Milford Road

Heavy snowfall is expected to disrupt travel across the Mackenzie Basin and Milford Road, with significant accumulation forecasted. According to MetService, the summit of Milford Road (State Highway 94) could receive up to 20 cm of snow overnight and into tomorrow. A road snow warning has been issued for this highway, which serves as the main access route to Milford Sound. The warning is in effect for 33 hours, starting from 14:00 today.
The highway was closed overnight but reopened earlier today. However, it is scheduled to close again from 17:00 as further snow is anticipated. Additionally, a road snow warning is in place for the Crown Range Road, which will be effective for three hours starting at 15:00 today.
As conditions continue to evolve, MetService warns that another round of snow may arrive late on Saturday, potentially extending the current warnings. Further north, SH7 between Springs Junction and Lewis Pass has reopened after being temporarily closed due to snow earlier today.
Forecasts indicate a risk of heavy snowfall in the Lewis Pass area on Monday morning, with expected accumulations of 5–10 cm above 750 m. In the Mackenzie Basin, light snow accumulation of around 2 cm is possible on SH8 and SH80 on both Sunday and Tuesday.
The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is advising motorists to drive with caution on all snow-affected roads. As travel conditions may change rapidly, drivers are encouraged to stay informed and prepared for winter weather challenges.
