Southland Stags Triumph Over Waikato to Claim Ranfurly Shield

The Southland Stags secured the prestigious Ranfurly Shield for the first time since 2011, achieving a significant 25-10 victory over the defending champions, Waikato, in Hamilton on March 15, 2024. This win marks a pivotal moment in the team’s history, showcasing their resilience and skill in challenging weather conditions.
Despite the heavy rain and gusty winds, the Stags displayed superior wet-weather rugby, surprising many as they faced the favored Mooloos. Waikato initially held a narrow lead of 10-8 at halftime, buoyed by the advantage of the wind. However, the home team faltered in the second half, succumbing to a series of mistakes that ultimately cost them the match.
Southland capitalized on Waikato’s errors, demonstrating impressive control and accuracy throughout the second half. Among the standout players for the Stags were midfield back Faletoi Peni and loose forward Sean Withy, both of whom played crucial roles in securing this historic victory. Their relentless effort and strategic play were instrumental in turning the tide of the game.
Looking ahead, the Stags will defend their newly acquired Ranfurly Shield against Canterbury next weekend, presenting another opportunity for the team to solidify their position in New Zealand rugby. The victory has reignited excitement among Southland fans, marking a significant milestone for the team and its supporters.
As the Stags celebrate this hard-fought win, the implications for their future matches remain promising. The dynamics of rugby in New Zealand are ever-evolving, and this victory could signal a resurgence for Southland in the competitive landscape of the sport.
