Taranaki Bunnings Manager Sentenced for Stealing Over $38,000

A manager at Bunnings Warehouse in Taranaki has been sentenced for stealing over $38,000 from his employer. Sherwin Ampaguey Tumapang, 51, exploited his position as second in charge at the Bell Block Trade Centre, carrying out fraudulent refund transactions over a period of eight months. The theft, amounting to $38,639.85, primarily funded his gambling addiction.
According to a police summary of facts, Tumapang’s criminal activities occurred between April and November 2022. He systematically processed numerous fake refunds that were credited to his account. The scheme was uncovered during an internal review, leading to Tumapang’s subsequent arrest.
In court, Tumapang admitted to the charges, revealing the extent of his gambling issues and the financial strain it placed on his life. The judge emphasized the breach of trust inherent in his role, noting that employees are expected to act with integrity. Tumapang’s actions not only affected the company financially but also undermined the trust placed in him by both his employer and colleagues.
The case highlights the vulnerabilities within retail operations where employees in managerial positions may exploit their authority for personal gain. Bunnings Warehouse has since implemented additional measures to strengthen internal controls and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Sentencing took place recently, and Tumapang will face further consequences as a result of his actions. The incident serves as a cautionary tale for businesses about the importance of vigilance and accountability in financial processes.
