Heavy rainfall overnight has led to multiple landslips and flooding on State Highway 3, resulting in the closure of a key route north from Taranaki. Vehicles are reported to be stuck in the Awakino Gorge, with local authorities urging motorists to avoid the area until conditions improve.

According to a statement from police, the adverse weather has caused significant disruption, making parts of the highway impassable. Officers are on-site and have confirmed that some vehicles remain unable to move due to the slips.

The NZ Transport Agency, known as Waka Kotahi, issued a Facebook update on Tuesday morning, indicating that the highway is closed from Mōkau to Piopio. They advised drivers to delay their journeys if possible and consider alternative routes. The agency stated, “The road will remain closed for several hours while crews clear the area.”

Waka Kotahi is expected to provide further updates later in the day, with the next report anticipated by late Tuesday afternoon.

This is not the first instance of severe weather impacting State Highway 3. In June, the same highway was closed for nearly 24 hours near Awakino after a mudslide obstructed traffic. The ongoing weather conditions highlight the vulnerability of this route and the need for caution among travelers in the region.

As contractors work to clear the debris and restore safe passage, authorities emphasize the importance of adhering to traffic advisories and staying informed about road conditions.
