Teens Attempt Theft of $700 in Chocolate at Highland Park Supermarket

A group of teenagers attempted to steal nearly $700 worth of chocolate and meat from a supermarket in Highland Park on March 14, 2024. Police were alerted around 17:00 local time and quickly responded to the scene, where they found the group filling their backpacks with stolen goods.
Upon arrival, officers observed some teens trying to exit the store with their haul. According to Inspector Rakana Cook, the Counties Manukau East area prevention manager, one of the suspects actively resisted arrest, attempting to push past police. In an altercation, he allegedly acted aggressively towards a staff member and assaulted a bystander who intervened.
Inspector Cook described the group’s behaviour as “unacceptable,” stating that they would face consequences through the Youth Aid process. The arrested individuals included two girls, both aged 16, and two boys aged 13 and 16. A fifth suspect managed to flee the scene and is currently being sought by authorities.
The incident has raised concerns about youth behaviour in the community. The member of the public who tried to assist the staff during the altercation left the scene before being identified, underscoring the challenges faced by bystanders in such situations.
Police continue to investigate the matter and are calling for any additional witnesses to come forward. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing issues related to shoplifting and the importance of community vigilance in addressing crime.
