Third Arrest Made in Murder of US PhD Student Kyle Whorrall
A third arrest has been made in connection with the murder of US PhD student Kyle Whorrall, who was fatally attacked at a bus stop in Auckland earlier this year. Whorrall, aged 33, was assaulted with a “large, bladed weapon” while waiting at a bus stop on St John’s Road on April 19, 2023. He sustained injuries deemed “unsurvivable” and succumbed to them in hospital, according to reports from 1News.
As of today, police confirmed that a second individual has been charged with Whorrall’s murder, bringing the total number of arrests related to this brutal attack to three. Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin stated that the investigation gained significant momentum in September after new evidence emerged. A 17-year-old male has been charged with both murder and aggravated robbery and is set to appear in the Auckland Youth Court tomorrow. He joins another 17-year-old, who faces the same charges, while a 33-year-old woman has been charged with two counts of being an accessory after the fact to murder.
Baldwin noted, “We have advised Kyle’s family in California of this significant development, and we continue to remain in contact with them as our investigation progresses.” He emphasized that the homicide investigation is ongoing, with a strong determination among officers to bring all responsible parties to justice.
In late September, police discovered a machete concealed in a reserve approximately 4 kilometers from the attack site. The discovery may play a crucial role in the ongoing investigation.
In October, Whorrall’s mother, Carole Whorrall, made an emotional appeal for anyone with relevant information to step forward. “While my foremost priority is securing justice for Kyle and ensuring his legacy endures, I am equally concerned for the safety and well-being of all New Zealanders,” she stated. She urged potential witnesses to assist the police, saying, “Your courage could make all the difference. Together, we can honour Kyle’s memory and help protect your communities.”
In memory of her son, a tree was planted near the site of the attack in May. The police continue to solicit information from the public and encourage anyone with knowledge related to the case to contact them at 105. The investigation remains a priority for law enforcement as they seek justice for Whorrall and his family.
