Two Arrested Following Violent Assault on Taxi Driver in Port Chalmers
A male and a female have been arrested following a violent assault on a taxi driver in Port Chalmers on the evening of March 15, 2024. The incident occurred around 22:50 local time near the port area, prompting a swift response from the police and members of the public.
According to police, the assault was reported by a passerby who witnessed the attack. Senior Sergeant Mark Crawford described the incident as a “cowardly attack” that does not reflect the values of the local community. He commended bystanders for their quick action, stating, “We saw members of the public determined to help someone in need, and they have our thanks.”
Witnesses provided vital information about the suspects’ movements, which led police to a property in Port Chalmers. At approximately 01:40 on March 16, officers arrested the two individuals. They are expected to face charges of assault with intent to injure at the Dunedin Youth Court.
