Wairarapa Police Boost Staffing for Safe New Year Celebrations
Wairarapa police have increased their staffing levels during the holiday season to promote safety as the New Year approaches. This decision follows reports of rising antisocial behaviour at the popular holiday destination of Riversdale Beach over the recent Labour Weekend, prompting authorities to take proactive measures to ensure a safe environment for all visitors.
The heightened police presence coincides with the implementation of a temporary alcohol ban at both Riversdale Beach and Castlepoint. Inspector Paul Hamlyn, the acting Wairarapa Area Commander, emphasized the importance of maintaining safety while allowing people to celebrate. He stated, “Police will have extra staff in the region over the holiday period to ensure that people can celebrate accordingly, but also ensuring the safety of everybody there.”
While urging revelers to enjoy the festivities, Inspector Hamlyn reminded the public about the alcohol ban in effect until New Year’s morning. He noted that the police are aware of a small number of incidents involving antisocial behaviour in recent months. Community members are encouraged to report any suspicious or illegal activities to law enforcement.
Masterton’s mayor, Bex Johnson, echoed the police’s safety message while wishing the community well for the New Year. She expressed gratitude towards local police for their ongoing efforts to maintain security and safety. “New Year’s Eve is about having fun but also looking out for those around you,” she stated, particularly urging parents to monitor their teenagers’ activities during the celebrations.
The Masterton District Council has also issued reminders regarding the public safety measures currently in place. Road closures and alcohol-free zones have been established at both Castlepoint and Riversdale to enhance safety during the holiday period. These restrictions will remain enforced until 06:00 on New Year’s Day. Residents and visitors within the closure areas may need to provide proof of address to access their homes or accommodations.
In early December 2023, the council adopted an alcohol bylaw aimed at addressing alcohol-related crime and disorder. A report mentioned that a comprehensive review would take place in 2026 to evaluate the effectiveness of the measures. The recent incidents of antisocial behaviour at Riversdale, including property damage and disturbances caused by intoxicated teenagers, have raised concerns among local residents regarding the enforcement of these regulations.
The police responded to the disruptions during Labour Weekend and have since engaged with residents and Mayor Johnson to discuss future enforcement strategies. As part of next year’s bylaw review, community input will be sought on alcohol-related issues experienced during the holiday season and Labour Weekend. Residents will also be queried about the potential for making temporary alcohol-free zones a permanent fixture in the bylaws to streamline enforcement and enhance community safety.
Council officials are set to report back in February on the next steps for the bylaw review process, which will involve significant community consultation. Inspector Hamlyn encouraged the public to use 111 for emergency situations or 105 for non-urgent reports.
As the New Year approaches, Wairarapa police remain committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable celebration for all members of the community.
