Auckland Hotels Near Capacity for Jehovah’s Witnesses Convention
Auckland is experiencing a surge in hotel occupancy as the city hosts a major international conference, the Special Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Taking place at Eden Park from January 9 to January 11, 2025, the event is expected to draw approximately 20,000 attendees, including 3,500 delegates from 20 countries.
The influx of visitors is providing a significant boost to Auckland’s economy. A spokesperson for the Jehovah’s Witness church indicated that 38 hotels across the city would be filled to near capacity during the convention. According to Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, the region’s cultural and events agency, the gathering is forecast to generate 60,500 visitor nights and contribute an estimated $20.6 million to the local economy.
Annie Dundas, destination director at Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, highlighted the positive impact of the convention on hotel occupancy rates. She noted that current occupancy levels stand at 85%, based on analyses from the STAR Market report. This figure marks a notable increase compared to the 61% occupancy recorded for the same period in January 2024.
With Auckland hotels nearing full capacity, the economic implications of the Special Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses extend beyond just accommodation. Local businesses, restaurants, and services are poised to benefit from the influx of visitors, further stimulating the economy during what is typically a quieter time of year.
The event showcases not only the organizational capabilities of the Jehovah’s Witness community but also the welcoming nature of Auckland as a host city for large-scale gatherings. The anticipated boost in visitor numbers serves as a reminder of the potential economic benefits associated with hosting international conventions.
As the convention approaches, local authorities and businesses are preparing to accommodate the thousands of visitors expected to arrive in Auckland. The successful hosting of such events can help reinforce the city’s reputation as a prime destination for international conferences and gatherings in the future.
