Auckland Woman Discovers Stage 3 Cancer During IVF Journey

A woman from Auckland, New Zealand, received a shocking diagnosis of stage 3 Hodgkin lymphoma while undergoing her first round of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Jenna Ellen, a 32-year-old salon owner, began her journey to start a family with her partner of 16 years, Josh, last month. The unexpected diagnosis disrupted their plans, with Ellen stating, “This just completely was not on our 2025 bingo card,” in an interview with the Daily Mail.
As she prepared for IVF treatment, Ellen began experiencing several alarming symptoms, including a persistent dry cough, a croaky voice, shortness of breath, and a tightness in her chest. Initially attributing these issues to her profession as a hairdresser, she thought they were simply the result of long hours spent speaking over noisy salon equipment. “Because I’m a hairdresser, I’m constantly talking over a dryer or working in a busy salon. I just thought it was normal,” she explained.
Ellen’s health concerns escalated as her symptoms did not improve. Following medical consultations, further investigation led to the diagnosis of lymphoma. The news was particularly devastating given her plans for starting a family. With the looming treatment ahead, Ellen faces the dual challenges of managing her health and pursuing her dream of motherhood.
Support from Family and Friends
In the wake of her diagnosis, Ellen has received an outpouring of support from family, friends, and the wider Auckland community. The salon industry, in particular, has rallied around her, providing emotional and practical assistance during this difficult time. Many of her clients and colleagues have expressed their solidarity, hoping for her swift recovery.
Ellen is committed to fighting her illness while maintaining her aspirations for the future. She has begun to educate herself about Hodgkin lymphoma and the treatment options available. “I want to be a mum, and I will do everything I can to make that happen,” she affirmed.
The Importance of Awareness
Ellen’s journey highlights the critical importance of listening to one’s body and seeking medical advice when experiencing unexplained symptoms. Healthcare professionals emphasize that early detection can significantly improve outcomes in cases of cancer, including Hodgkin lymphoma. Ellen’s experience serves as a reminder for others to remain vigilant about their health.
As she navigates this challenging chapter, Jenna Ellen remains hopeful. She encourages others to stay proactive about their health and to support those who may be facing similar battles. With ongoing treatment and the backing of her loved ones, she is determined to overcome this obstacle and keep her dream of motherhood alive.
