Auckland Woman Discovers Stage 3 Cancer During IVF Treatment

A 32-year-old woman from Auckland, Jenna Ellen, received a shocking diagnosis of stage 3 Hodgkin lymphoma while undergoing her first round of in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. This unexpected revelation came after she had ignored multiple symptoms that began to manifest in the weeks leading up to her fertility treatments.
Ellen and her partner, Josh, have been together for 16 years and started their journey towards parenthood last month. “I was looking forward to conceiving and hopefully being a mum. This just completely was not on our 2025 bingo card,” she expressed in an interview with the Daily Mail.
In the lead-up to her IVF procedures, Ellen began experiencing a persistent dry cough, a croaky voice, shortness of breath, and a tight sensation in her chest. “Because I’m a hairdresser, I’m constantly talking over a dryer or working in a busy salon. I just thought it was normal,” she explained, reflecting on how these symptoms were initially dismissed.
Diagnosis and Treatment Journey
Ellen’s diagnosis was confirmed after a series of medical evaluations. The news has profoundly impacted her and her partner, who were excitedly preparing for their first child. With the diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system, their plans have shifted dramatically.
The couple is now faced with the challenge of navigating Ellen’s treatment while also considering their aspirations for a family. Hodgkin lymphoma is typically treatable, and many patients respond well to chemotherapy. Ellen remains hopeful for a positive outcome, stating, “Getting through this is my first priority. I want to be there for my future child.”
In the face of this unexpected struggle, Jenna Ellen has highlighted the importance of listening to one’s body and seeking medical advice when symptoms arise. She encourages others to be proactive about their health, especially when experiencing unusual or persistent symptoms.
Ellen’s story serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the challenges that can arise unexpectedly. As she embarks on her treatment journey, she aims to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and the need for open conversations about health issues, particularly for women who may overlook their symptoms.
In the meantime, the couple is focused on supporting each other through this difficult time and maintaining hope for the future. As they confront the uncertainties ahead, they are determined to remain resilient in their fight against cancer.
