Bougainville Election Results Begin to Emerge After Delays
Results from the recent Bougainville elections are starting to emerge following delays in vote counting. The election, held earlier this month, faced interruptions due to major flooding and logistical issues with ballot boxes from five provinces. Counting resumed on Friday, and preliminary results indicate significant outcomes for several constituencies.
Lucas Bierepi has been confirmed as the first member-elect for the newly established Kereaka Constituency, located on the west coast of North Bougainville. Bierepi secured 976 votes, as reported by the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG). His election marks a pivotal moment for the constituency, as he prepares to represent Kereaka in the 5th Bougainville House of Representatives.
In addition to Bierepi’s victory, Ezekiel Massat has successfully retained his position as the member for Tonsu Constituency. Massat garnered a total of 1,599 votes, exceeding the absolute majority requirement of 1,456 votes after the fifth exclusion round. His re-election underscores his continued support among the electorate.
Another notable result comes from the Torokina Constituency, where Fabian Epota Saleu has also maintained his seat. He received 1,271 votes, surpassing the absolute majority threshold of 1,062 votes. The runner-up, Michael Piriri, finished with 851 votes, highlighting a significant margin in this competitive race.
Desmond Tsianai, the Bougainville electoral commissioner, confirmed to RNZ Pacific that the writs for the election need to be returned by September 22, 2023. Tsianai noted that despite the earlier setbacks, voting had proceeded smoothly overall, which is a positive sign for the electoral process in the region.
As counting continues, the results will provide a clearer picture of the political landscape in Bougainville. The community watches closely as newly elected representatives prepare to take their positions and address the challenges ahead.
