Chef Retains Position at Christchurch Restaurant After Assault Charges
A chef in Christchurch has retained his position at the restaurant where he worked despite being charged with indecently assaulting four teenage employees. Sumeer Thapa, 46, who works at Lazeez Mediterranean Grill in Shirley, reportedly maintains that he “doesn’t think he did anything wrong.” His continued employment has raised significant concerns among the community and beyond.
Thapa faced serious allegations, including seven counts of indecent assault and four counts of sexual conduct with a young person, specifically involving four teenage girls between the ages of 15 and 17 from 2021 to 2024. Some of these charges were representative, indicating that New Zealand Police believe Thapa committed multiple offences of the same nature under similar circumstances.
The restaurant owner has publicly expressed full support for Thapa, stating that he is valued as a staff member. This decision has sparked a backlash, with many questioning the ethics of allowing someone with such serious accusations to remain in their position.
Community reactions have been mixed, with some patrons expressing outrage at the management’s decision, while others argue for due process and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. Critics emphasize the potential impact on the young victims and the message it sends to employees about workplace safety and accountability.
Legal experts have weighed in on the implications of this case, noting that the restaurant’s response may not only affect its reputation but could also raise concerns regarding employee welfare policies.
The ongoing legal proceedings against Thapa are set to continue, with the next hearing scheduled for later this year. As the situation develops, both the restaurant and the community face scrutiny regarding their handling of serious allegations against a staff member.
This case highlights the complexities surrounding workplace conduct and the responsibilities of employers to maintain a safe environment for all employees, particularly minors. It remains to be seen how the legal outcomes will influence both Thapa’s future and that of Lazeez Mediterranean Grill.
