China Donates NZ$100 Million to Vanuatu for Earthquake Recovery

China has pledged a significant donation of NZ$100 million to support Vanuatu in renovating public buildings damaged by the earthquake that struck on December 17, 2022. According to the Vanuatu Daily Post, the funds will aid in the reconstruction of key facilities, including the parliament complex and the Prime Minister’s office. Other structures slated for repair are Korman Stadium, Malapoa College, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang stated that this charitable grant underscores Beijing’s commitment to assisting Vanuatu’s recovery efforts following the natural disaster. The donation is a part of ongoing bilateral relations and reflects China’s role in regional support mechanisms.

Visa-Free Travel Initiatives for Pacific Nationals

In related news, New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters has announced plans to collaborate with Samoa on establishing visa-free travel for Pacific nationals. During an interview with PMN’s Pacific Mornings, Peters emphasized that the initiative requires full backing from the Samoan government.

This development follows calls from former MP Anae Arthur Anae, who urged the New Zealand government to grant three-month arrival visas to citizens of Pacific nations. In Fiji, law enforcement officials have charged six men with two counts of unlawful importation of methamphetamine.
