Diver Rescued After Three Hours Adrift in Goat Island Reserve
A diver was rescued late last night after being adrift for over three hours in the dark waters off Goat Island Marine Reserve, located north of Auckland. The diver, who had gone missing during a planned night dive, was located and brought to safety by rescue teams. Remarkably, he was found in good condition despite his extended time in the water.
The incident began when the diver’s vehicle was discovered parked at Goat Island, prompting police to alert the Coastguard. Concern grew as authorities realized the diver had not returned from his dive. According to Sergeant Craig Kennedy from the Auckland Police Maritime Unit, “He had dived at night before, but we were concerned the diver was out there on his own.”
Coastguard personnel launched a search operation, scouring the area and utilizing the latest equipment to locate the missing diver. After several hours, they successfully found him and provided immediate assistance. The diver was able to climb aboard the rescue craft, demonstrating resilience after his time spent in the water.
This incident highlights the importance of safety measures for divers, especially during night excursions. Authorities continue to stress the need for divers to ensure they have proper equipment and to notify someone about their diving plans.
The successful rescue operation reflects the effectiveness of the coordinated efforts between local police and the Coastguard. As the diver recovers, this case serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with diving in isolated areas, particularly under challenging conditions.
