Dunedin Man Charged After Knife Threat and Assault on Officers
A 30-year-old man faces multiple charges after allegedly threatening police officers with a knife and biting one of them in Dunedin. The incident occurred on Friday, March 15, 2024, when police responded to reports of a person interfering with vehicles. Upon locating the suspect on King Edward Street, officers informed him that he was under arrest for unlawful interference.
According to Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, when officers approached the man, he turned and brandished a knife. This escalated the situation significantly, forcing the officers to respond to the immediate threat. The man reportedly attempted to resist arrest, which led to a physical altercation with one officer. During the struggle, he bit the officer, resulting in additional charges.
Police successfully subdued the man and took him into custody. He has since been charged with threatening behavior, unlawful interference with vehicles, and assaulting an officer. The officer who was bitten received medical attention for his injuries but is expected to recover fully.
