Eugene Bareman Takes Stand Against Coward Punches in New Trust

In a significant move to combat violence in sports and society, Eugene Bareman, head coach of Auckland’s City Kickboxing, has established the Walk Without Fear Trust. Launched in 2023, this initiative aims to raise awareness and advocate for stricter penalties related to coward punches—unexpected attacks that leave victims defenseless. This effort follows the tragic death of athlete Fau Vake, who succumbed to injuries from such an assault in 2021. His attacker received a sentence of two years and nine months for manslaughter.
The issue of coward punches gained renewed attention last month when Daniel Nganeko was killed in a violent incident outside a rugby clubroom in New Plymouth. A 22-year-old man pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is scheduled for sentencing in October 2023. These incidents highlight the urgent need for action, according to Bareman, who expressed concern over the ongoing prevalence of such attacks.
The Walk Without Fear Trust was formed as a direct response to the loss of Vake, whose story resonated deeply within the community. Bareman explained that while many assaults go unreported, the impact on victims and their families can be devastating. He noted that numerous individuals have shared their experiences with him since the trust’s inception, revealing a troubling trend of violence that often goes unnoticed.
Bareman emphasized the importance of addressing this issue not only for the sake of athletes but for society as a whole. “We must create an environment where people can feel safe and secure,” he said. The trust’s mission is to foster conversation around the consequences of coward punches and ensure that victims receive the support they need.
The coach’s efforts have garnered attention from various sectors, reflecting a broader movement toward accountability and safety in public spaces. By advocating for harsher penalties, Bareman hopes to deter potential offenders and contribute to a cultural shift regarding violence.
As discussions surrounding coward punches continue, the Walk Without Fear Trust aims to be a driving force in creating awareness and facilitating change. With initiatives planned for community outreach and education, Bareman is committed to making a lasting impact on the issue.
The trust serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and advocacy in the face of violence. Through increased awareness and community involvement, Bareman believes that it is possible to reduce the occurrence of coward punches and foster a safer environment for all.
