A devastating fire has resulted in the tragic deaths of an elderly couple in their Foxton Beach home on Queen Street. The fire broke out early on the morning of October 3, 2023, engulfing the property and leaving the local community in shock.
Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions as the flames rapidly consumed the house. Neighbours acted quickly, helping one another evacuate their homes as the fire spread. The couple, identified by family members as Pomana Marsh’s grandparents, had been living in the house for many years.
Speaking to the media, Marsh expressed profound gratitude for the support received from the community during this difficult time. He stated, “The outpouring of love and assistance has been overwhelming. It’s a testament to the strength of our community.”
Fire and Emergency New Zealand officials are conducting an investigation into the cause of the blaze. While the circumstances surrounding the fire remain unclear, the local fire service has urged residents to remain vigilant and ensure their homes are equipped with working smoke alarms.
The impact of this incident extends beyond the loss of life; it has deeply affected the Foxton Beach community. Residents have come together, offering condolences and support to the grieving family. Community members have also initiated fundraising efforts to assist with funeral expenses as the couple’s family navigates this tragedy.
Local authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses. In the meantime, the community continues to mourn the loss of two cherished individuals who have left an indelible mark on those who knew them.
