Firefighters Battle 322-Hectare Blaze in Tongariro National Park
Emergency services are currently engaged in a significant firefighting effort at Tongariro National Park, where a vegetation fire has consumed approximately 322 hectares of land. This morning, dozens of firefighters, supported by five helicopters, are working to control the blaze, aided by mild weather conditions that prevailed overnight.
According to Fire and Emergency New Zealand, four helicopters are utilizing monsoon buckets to deliver water directly to the fire, while a fifth helicopter coordinates the aerial assault. The organization noted that fixed-wing aircraft are on standby should the situation escalate and additional resources become necessary. The aerial fleet will complement the efforts of approximately 30 firefighters stationed on the ground.
The fire’s location near State Highway 47 poses challenges for both the firefighting teams and local traffic. Fire and Emergency officials are prioritizing both safety and containment strategies to mitigate risks associated with the blaze.
As the situation develops, authorities are expected to provide further updates regarding the fire’s status and any potential impact on surrounding areas. Community members and visitors to the national park are encouraged to stay informed through official channels.
