Gisborne Home Severely Damaged in Fire Ignited by Petrol

A fire in Gisborne has resulted in significant damage to a home after a resident reportedly used petrol to ignite a fire in the fireplace. The incident occurred on September 29, 2023, with the first emergency call reaching Fire and Emergency New Zealand at approximately 09:25 local time.
Firefighters responded promptly to the blaze, which originated in the lounge area of the three-bedroom house located on Anzac St near Roebuck Rd. As they arrived, thick plumes of black smoke were visible, prompting an immediate response to contain the fire.
According to a specialist fire investigator, the fire quickly spread from the lounge to the kitchen and dining room. “The firefighters were able to attack it head-on and were able to stop it spreading to the rear of the home,” the investigator stated. Their swift action helped prevent further damage and potential injuries.
Fortunately, the occupants of the house suffered only minor injuries during the incident. Emergency services assessed the situation and ensured that all individuals were safe and accounted for. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the use of petrol as an accelerant has raised concerns about safety practices in residential settings.
The local fire department continues to emphasize the importance of adhering to safety guidelines when handling flammable materials. This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with improper fire-starting methods, particularly in home environments.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand has reiterated its commitment to educating the public on safe fire practices. Community workshops and resources are available for residents to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring that residents are aware of the risks that can arise from the misuse of flammable substances. The Gisborne community is urged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety in their homes.
