Greyhound Racing Season Ends with 17 Fatalities, Over 800 Injured
The greyhound racing industry concluded its 2024/25 season marked by a troubling increase in fatalities, totaling 17 deaths of racing dogs. The final incident involved Opawa Justin, a two-year-old greyhound who tragically suffered a catastrophic injury during a race at Addington Raceway in Christchurch on July 31, 2024. Following his victory in the race, Opawa Justin fell at the lure, fracturing his left elbow. Veterinarians assessed the injury as too severe, leading to his euthanasia.
Animal welfare organization Save Animals From Exploitation (Safe) has highlighted this season as the deadliest for greyhounds since 2021. The group has consistently advocated for the welfare of racing dogs, expressing deep concern over the ongoing fatalities and the overall safety of the sport.
In addition to the fatalities, reports indicate that over 800 dogs sustained injuries throughout the season, raising serious questions about the conditions under which these animals race. The figures underscore the need for urgent reforms in the greyhound racing industry to enhance the safety and welfare of the dogs involved.
Critics argue that the repeated incidents of injury and death reflect systemic issues within the racing infrastructure. Calls for improved regulations and oversight have intensified, with advocates emphasizing the responsibility of racing authorities to ensure the humane treatment of these animals.
The season’s conclusion has prompted a renewed focus on animal welfare in sports, with many advocating for comprehensive changes to protect greyhounds from similar fates in the future. The situation continues to evoke strong reactions across the community, highlighting an ongoing debate about the ethics of greyhound racing and the treatment of racing dogs.
As discussions unfold, stakeholders within the industry may need to address the growing concerns surrounding animal welfare. The tragic end to Opawa Justin’s season serves as a poignant reminder of the risks faced by greyhounds in a sport that has long drawn criticism for its treatment of animals.
