Hawke’s Bay Athlete Deena-Ranginui Puketapu Wins Top Award Again
Deena-Ranginui Puketapu, a talented athlete from Hawke’s Bay, has been awarded the prestigious title of New Zealand Defence Force Sportsperson of the Year for the second time. This recognition comes after a remarkable career that spans 15 years as a physical training officer in the Royal New Zealand Navy. A graduate of Hukarere Māori Girls College, Puketapu first earned the NZDF Young Sportsperson of the Year accolade in 2014, followed by her initial win of the top award in 2016.
In the past year, Puketapu has showcased her skills in various competitions. She represented New Zealand as part of the Open Mixed Touch Team and was named the NZ Open Mixed Female MVP. Additionally, she played for the NZ Māori Open Women’s Touch Team during a tournament in Sydney and was selected for the NRL Māori All Stars, where she earned a spot in the NRL All Stars Team of the Match.
Recent Achievements on the International Stage
In July 2024, Petty Officer Puketapu further distinguished herself by joining the New Zealand Touch Blacks. The team competed at the Federation of International Touch World Cup held in England, where they secured a silver medal in the women’s division. This accomplishment highlights not only Puketapu’s individual talent but also her dedication to advancing the sport of touch rugby at an international level.
Puketapu’s repeated success underscores her commitment to excellence in both her military career and athletic pursuits. As she continues to inspire young athletes, her legacy within the New Zealand Defence Force and the broader sports community becomes increasingly significant.
