Hawke’s Bay Voting Venues Ready for Last-Minute Turnout

Voting venues across Hawke’s Bay and the Tararua district are prepared to accept local election voting papers until the noon deadline on Saturday, marking a crucial moment in the democratic process. Over 50 locations, featuring orange bins designated for ballot papers, have been confirmed by the Napier City Council, alongside the Wairoa, Hastings, and Central Hawke’s Bay District Councils.

As the number of returned voting papers approaches some of the highest levels in recent years, local authorities are emphasizing the importance of participation. While most venues will only collect standard votes, a limited number, primarily council offices, will accommodate special votes. This includes individuals who are not listed on the printed electoral roll, such as those who have recently turned 18 or are voting for the first time.

Encouraging Civic Engagement

Retiring Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst is vocal about the significance of voting, urging residents to exercise their democratic rights. “It’s everyone’s democratic right and their chance to help shape the communities they live in,” Hazlehurst stated. Her comments come in light of the disappointing voter turnout in 2022, which stood at just 32.95%. The low participation rate was largely attributed to several positions, including her own, going uncontested.
