Helicopter Pilot Describes Chaos Following Whakaari Eruption
A helicopter pilot who was the first civilian to land on Whakaari/White Island following its catastrophic eruption in December 2019 has shared harrowing details of the aftermath. Robert Mark Law, director of Kahu NZ Helicopters, testified this week in Auckland during the ongoing coroner’s inquiry into the tragic events that unfolded that day.
The eruption occurred unexpectedly on December 9, 2019, while Law was driving between Tauranga and Whakatāne. Witnessing the eruption from the road, he quickly arranged to fly to the volcano to assist. His military background, including service with the SAS, equipped him with vital skills for responding to emergencies.
As Law approached the island, he faced a chaotic scene. Survivors were in distress, and the threat of a subsequent eruption loomed large. Law recounted the overwhelming sense of urgency as he landed amid the smoke and debris. He described the scene as chaotic, with injured individuals requiring immediate medical attention.
During his testimony, Law emphasized the importance of quick decision-making in crisis situations. He coordinated with other emergency responders and worked to triage the injured, providing critical assistance until more help arrived. The challenges he faced were compounded by the unstable environment; the volcano remained active, posing a risk to both rescuers and victims.
The coroner’s inquiry aims to uncover the circumstances surrounding the eruption and the response efforts that followed. It seeks to determine whether any safety measures were overlooked and to provide closure to the families of the victims.
Law’s account sheds light on the immense pressure faced by first responders in disaster scenarios. His experience highlights the bravery exhibited by those who rushed to help, often at great personal risk. The inquiry continues to delve into the events of that fateful day, examining testimonies from various witnesses and officials involved in the rescue operations.
As the inquiry progresses, the focus remains on understanding the events that led to the eruption and ensuring that lessons are learned to prevent future tragedies. The efforts of individuals like Law reflect the resilience of those who confront chaos and danger in their pursuit of saving lives.
