Investigation Launched After Chemical Burns at Christchurch Preschool
WorkSafe has initiated an investigation following an incident at Kindercare Woolston in Christchurch, where seven individuals suffered chemical burns while using a waterslide. The affected included five preschool-aged children and two staff members, all of whom required hospitalization due to exposure to a hazardous substance.
Emergency services responded to the incident on Ferry Road at approximately 13:13 local time. According to a spokesperson for Kindercare, the initial assessment suggests that children were exposed to a chemical detergent typically used for sterilizing the centre’s kitchen equipment. The daycare centre has expressed its “deep regret” over the situation, underscoring its commitment to providing a safe environment for children.
Details of the Incident
The chemical burns occurred when the substance was inadvertently poured on the waterslide, leading to immediate discomfort and injury among the children and staff. Emergency crews were deployed swiftly to the scene, where they assessed the situation and transported those affected to local hospitals for treatment.
This incident has raised significant concerns about safety protocols at early childhood centres. WorkSafe, New Zealand’s workplace health and safety regulator, has issued a non-disturbance notice, which prevents any alterations to the scene as investigations proceed. This step is crucial in determining the circumstances surrounding the exposure and ensuring accountability.
Response from Kindercare and the Community
Following the incident, Kindercare Woolston has committed to cooperating fully with the investigation. The centre’s management released a statement expressing their distress over the event and their dedication to the safety of children in their care. They have pledged to review and strengthen their safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
Parents and community members are understandably concerned about the incident. Many are calling for more stringent safety regulations in early childhood education settings, particularly regarding the use of cleaning chemicals and hazardous substances.
As investigations continue, WorkSafe will analyze the evidence to ascertain how the incident occurred and what measures can be implemented to enhance safety standards in similar facilities. The outcome of this investigation could lead to significant changes in operational protocols for childcare centres across the region.
The wellbeing of children remains the highest priority, and this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of rigorous safety practices in environments where young children gather.
