Joan Jett Reflects on Her Journey to Rock Stardom
Joan Jett, the iconic rock musician known for her anthems and trailblazing spirit, recalls the challenges she faced as a young girl aspiring to play electric guitar. Speaking with RNZ’s Afternoons, Jett shared her experience of being told that girls should not play rock music, which only fueled her determination to succeed in the industry.
When she first picked up a Gibson guitar, the societal expectations of the time limited her ambitions. “It would have been okay if I had an acoustic guitar, but it was the fact the electricity made it like you’re not allowed,” Jett explained. She highlighted the contradiction in being discouraged from playing rock music while girls in her class played classical pieces on instruments like the violin. “What you’re saying is I’m not allowed to,” she emphasized, reflecting on the barriers she faced early in her career.
Despite the initial resistance, Jett rose to prominence as a member of The Runaways and later as the frontwoman of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Her hits, including “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,” “Crimson and Clover,” and “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” became worldwide successes. Yet, the road to recognition was not easy. Jett revealed that they received 23 rejection letters from record companies when they pitched their music. “We sent them five hits, songs that became hits here in the States, and they responded with a variety of rejection letters,” she said, recalling the disappointing responses that ranged from disinterest to suggestions to change their sound.
Now, 50 years into her career, Jett remains passionate about her music. She still experiences a thrill before every performance, stating, “I think the day that I don’t feel that is the day I gotta stop for sure.” This anticipation, she notes, is not fear but rather a sign that she is still connected to her craft.
Jett also expressed that in recent years, she has learned more about life and the music industry than ever before. “I’ve learned a lot more in the last six years or so than maybe in my whole life,” she remarked, indicating a deeper understanding of people and the complexities of the world.
Fans will have the opportunity to see Joan Jett and the Blackhearts perform live in New Zealand as part of the upcoming Summer Concert Tour. The lineup features other renowned artists including Iggy Pop, Hoodoo Gurus, and ZED. This tour promises to be a celebration of rock music, showcasing Jett’s enduring legacy and passion for her art.
As she continues to inspire a new generation of musicians, Jett’s story serves as a reminder of the resilience needed to break through barriers and pursue one’s dreams, regardless of societal expectations. Whether on stage or in the studio, her love for rock music remains as vibrant as ever.
