Kaitāia Celebrates Life of Business Leader Monty Knight
Kaitāia gathered to honour the memory of local businessman and winemaker Monty Knight at a memorial service that reflected his enthusiasm and community spirit. The event, attended by around 300 people, took place at Te Ahu on November 25, 2023, following Knight’s passing on November 16. A 57-year-old woman, whose name remains suppressed, has been charged with his murder, prompting a significant outpouring of support from the community.
While Knight’s family opted for a private funeral and cremation, they organized this public memorial to allow the wider community to pay their respects. Attendees filled the main hall of Te Ahu, with additional viewers watching on large screens set up outside and in the adjoining cinema. The gathering highlighted Knight’s impact on Kaitāia and the surrounding areas.
Community Leaders Reflect on Knight’s Legacy
Among the speakers at the memorial was Wayne Brown, the current Mayor of Auckland and former Mayor of the Far North. He shared his longstanding connection with Knight, recalling their early interactions when Knight was establishing his business in Kerikeri. Brown remarked on the significance of holding the service at Te Ahu, noting that Knight had previously helped to fundraise for the renovation of the hall, underscoring his commitment to community development.
Attendees spoke highly of Knight’s contributions to the local economy and his passion for winemaking. Friends and colleagues remembered him as a person who not only excelled in business but also dedicated himself to the betterment of his community. His distinct sense of humour and warm personality were frequently mentioned, offering a glimpse into the character that endeared him to many.
As the memorial service progressed, stories and anecdotes shared by those who knew Knight painted a picture of a man deeply invested in the lives of others. This sentiment resonated throughout the hall, creating an atmosphere of unity and shared grief among attendees.
Impact of Knight’s Death on Kaitāia
The tragic circumstances surrounding Knight’s death have left the community in shock. The ongoing legal proceedings against the accused have added a layer of complexity to the mourning process, as the community grapples with the loss of a beloved figure. Many expressed their desire for justice while also focusing on celebrating Knight’s life and achievements.
As Kaitāia moves forward, the memorial service serves as a reminder of the profound impact one individual can have on their community. The legacy of Monty Knight will undoubtedly continue through the many lives he touched and the initiatives he championed. His contributions to the region’s viticulture and local economy will be remembered as a testament to his passion and dedication.
In the coming weeks, community leaders plan to discuss ways to honour Knight’s legacy through initiatives that reflect his values and commitment to Kaitāia. This effort aims not only to remember the man but also to continue his vision for a vibrant and supportive community.
