Kmart Recalls Gel Packs Over Toxic Ethylene Glycol Risk
Kmart has issued a recall for its Anko-branded Small Gel Pak and Large Gel Pak due to concerns that these products may contain a hazardous substance. The recall, announced in September 2023, comes after investigations revealed the potential presence of ethylene glycol instead of the safer ingredient, glycerol. Ethylene glycol is a colorless and odorless substance commonly found in antifreeze, coolants, and de-icing fluids, posing serious health risks if ingested.
The gel packs, popular for their use in hot and cold therapy, were sold in Kmart stores across Australia. According to Kmart’s official statement, customers who purchased these gel packs are advised to stop using them immediately and return the products for a full refund. The company is committed to ensuring customer safety and addressing any concerns related to the recall.
Ethylene glycol has been linked to severe health effects, including kidney failure and neurological damage. In contrast, glycerol is deemed safe and is commonly used in products such as moisturizers, cosmetics, and certain food items. The potential substitution raises significant health concerns, particularly for consumers who might unknowingly use a product containing a toxic substance.
Consumers are encouraged to check their homes for the affected gel packs. The recall affects specific batches, and details can be found on Kmart’s official website or through announcements made by health authorities. Kmart is actively working with regulatory agencies to monitor the situation and ensure that all affected products are removed from shelves.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is also involved in the recall process. They emphasize the importance of consumer awareness regarding product safety and the identification of potentially harmful substances.
This situation serves as a reminder for consumers to remain vigilant about product recalls and the safety of items used in their households. Kmart’s proactive response demonstrates a commitment to customer safety, but it also highlights the need for stringent quality control measures within manufacturing processes.
As the recall progresses, Kmart and health officials will continue to provide updates to ensure public safety is prioritized.
