Kmart Recalls Gel Packs Over Toxic Substance Concerns
Kmart has issued a recall of its Anko-branded Small Gel Pak and Large Gel Pak due to concerns that these products may contain a harmful substance. The recall, announced in October 2023, aims to protect customers from potential exposure to ethylene glycol, a toxic compound that can pose serious health risks.
The gel packs were found to potentially contain ethylene glycol instead of the safer ingredient, glycerol. Ethylene glycol is a colourless and odourless liquid commonly used in antifreeze, coolants, and de-icing fluids. In contrast, glycerol is widely regarded as non-toxic and is often found in cosmetics, moisturisers, and some food products.
Kmart has urged customers to stop using the affected gel packs immediately and return them to the nearest store for a full refund. The company is taking this precautionary measure seriously, as exposure to ethylene glycol can lead to severe health implications, including kidney damage and central nervous system effects.
In addition to the recall, Kmart has taken steps to enhance its quality control measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The retailer is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its customers by maintaining high standards for its products.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled gel packs are advised to check their homes and bring any remaining products back to Kmart. The retailer has made it clear that the safety of its customers is its top priority, and it is cooperating with relevant authorities to address the issue.
This recall follows a broader trend in the retail industry, where companies are increasingly vigilant about product safety. Retailers are under pressure to ensure that their products meet stringent safety standards, particularly when it comes to items that can be used by children and families.
As the situation develops, Kmart will continue to communicate updates regarding the recall and any further actions needed to safeguard consumers. Customers are encouraged to stay informed and reach out to Kmart’s customer service for any questions or concerns regarding the recall.
