Recent reports indicate a significant increase in surf rescues in the Eastern region, with lifeguards responding to 14 rescues over the past two days. Notably, four of the swimmers rescued were outside lifeguard-patrol hours, while another four were found swimming beyond the flagged patrol zones on New Year’s Day. This surge contributes to a total of 93 rescues since October 25, representing a dramatic rise from just 17 rescues during the same period last year.

High Demand at Popular Beaches

A spokesperson for Surf Life Saving NZ in the eastern region commented on the situation, noting that while the overall number of beachgoers has been relatively low, certain areas have seen a spike in attendance. Whangamatā Beach, for instance, attracted approximately 2,500 visitors, resulting in four rescues, while other beaches in the region accounted for three additional rescues.

The spokesperson emphasized the importance of swimming safely and adhering to lifeguard instructions, especially during busy periods. With the substantial increase in rescues this season, authorities are urging beachgoers to remain vigilant and swim only in designated areas.

The rise in rescues highlights the ongoing challenges faced by lifeguards, particularly during peak beach days. As the summer season progresses, the need for awareness and adherence to safety protocols becomes increasingly critical to ensure the safety of all swimmers.
