Major Fire Erupts in East Auckland During Firefighters’ Strike
A significant fire erupted at a Middle Eastern grocery store in East Auckland on March 7, 2024, coinciding with a one-hour strike by members of the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union. The incident occurred around 12:07 PM at Pita House, located on Cortina Place in the suburb of Pakuranga. Flames and thick black smoke were visible from a distance, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
Emergency services reported that they were addressing a fire at the industrial building adjacent to Pakuranga Highway. Video footage captured by bystanders showed large plumes of smoke rising into the sky, as onlookers gathered to witness the unfolding scene. A police spokesperson confirmed that Fire and Emergency New Zealand was the lead agency responding to the incident.
Initially, two fire trucks from the Clevedon Volunteer Fire Brigade were dispatched to the scene. As the situation escalated, additional fire crews from various locations in Auckland and Waikato joined the effort to combat the blaze. By approximately 12:40 PM, fire crews from Laingholm, Patumahoe, Waitākere, Pukekohe, Pōkeno, and Beachlands were actively involved in firefighting efforts.
Witnesses described the fire’s intensity, with one anonymous individual waiting for a bus noting that the roof of the building was “completely engulfed in flames.” He added that the smoke was “thick and black,” creating hazardous driving conditions for motorists on the nearby highway. At the time, firefighters were still in the process of setting up hoses and had yet to begin actively fighting the flames.
The emotional toll on the family that owns Pita House was evident as they arrived at the scene, visibly distressed as they watched their business engulfed in flames. Emergency responders, including at least two police cars and an ambulance, were present to manage the situation.
The fire’s timing coincided with a planned strike by firefighters, occurring between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM, which was communicated through a voicemail message from the northern fire communications office. The strike has raised concerns about the impact on emergency response during critical incidents like this one.
As the situation continues to develop, authorities are focused on containing the fire and ensuring public safety. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
