Man Charged for Approaching Schoolgirls in Christchurch

A man under a preventive detention order for sexual violence has been charged with approaching schoolgirls in Christchurch, New Zealand. Leo Darin Goodwin, aged 53, allegedly violated the conditions of this order by interacting with teenagers under the age of 16. He appeared at the Christchurch District Court on October 17, 2023, and has been remanded in custody following the allegations.
According to the New Zealand Police, Goodwin is accused of soliciting inappropriate favours from girls in exchange for money. This behaviour has raised serious concerns among parents and school officials in the area. In response to the situation, police have reached out to 11 schools in Christchurch to inform them of the ongoing investigation.
The police stated that the inquiries are still in their early stages, but they are taking the allegations seriously. Officers are working to ensure the safety of the community and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
Goodwin’s preventive detention order was previously imposed due to prior convictions related to sexual violence. This latest incident marks a troubling breach of that order, prompting law enforcement to act swiftly.
As the investigation unfolds, the police are focused on gathering more evidence and assessing the situation. Parents and guardians in Christchurch are advised to remain vigilant and discuss personal safety with their children.
The Christchurch community is now grappling with the implications of this case, as it highlights ongoing concerns regarding children’s safety in public spaces. Authorities are committed to ensuring such incidents are addressed decisively to maintain a safe environment for all citizens.
The court proceedings will continue, and updates are expected as the case develops.
