Napier Boys’ High School Aims for National Basketball Title

The senior basketball team from Napier Boys’ High School is poised to make a significant impact at the upcoming national schools tournament in Palmerston North. With aspirations of securing the national title for the first time in 33 years, the team aims to build on its current momentum as the reigning Super 8 champions.
Historically, Napier Boys’ High has claimed the national title only once, in 1992, when Jamie Henare, the current assistant coach, played on the team. This year, the team’s chances have been bolstered by the presence of Jackson Ball, a standout fourth-year player who recently made headlines by becoming the third-youngest player to join the Tall Blacks, New Zealand’s national men’s basketball team.
Team Spirit and Expectations
Last year, Napier Boys’ High faced fierce competition as underdogs but now finds itself in a different position. According to Henare, “Last year we were the underdogs in every game, but this year we’re the favourites. Everyone knows Jackson.” Ball’s recent elevation to the Tall Blacks, coupled with a strong performance in the Sal’s NBL, has shifted the expectations surrounding the team.
During the 2024 finals, Napier Boys’ High narrowly missed the championship, losing to Christ’s College with a score of 91-88. This close match has motivated the team to strive for better results. The current roster is filled with talent and determination, aiming to make history by bringing the national title back to Napier.
A Legacy of Achievement
The excitement surrounding the team is palpable, especially with the legacy they are trying to build. The last national title win in 1992 is a distant memory for many, but for the current players, it represents both a challenge and an inspiration. The upcoming tournament presents an opportunity not only to honor past achievements but also to carve out a new legacy.
As the team prepares for the tournament, the focus remains on teamwork, strategy, and leveraging the skills of key players like Ball. His recognition as a top player in the country has not only elevated his profile but has also drawn attention to the talent within the Napier Boys’ High program.
With the tournament just around the corner, the anticipation builds. The team is ready to face its competitors, armed with the hope of a championship title and the determination to succeed. The narrative of underdogs shifting to favorites adds an exciting layer to their journey, making this year’s quest for the national title one to watch.
