Niamh Fisher-Black Secures Silver at UCI Road World Championships

Nelson cyclist Niamh Fisher-Black claimed a silver medal in the women’s road race at the UCI Road World Championships held in Kigali, Rwanda. The race, which took place on September 24, 2023, featured a challenging 164-kilometre course that tested the endurance and strategy of the competitors.
The event concluded with a stunning performance from Magdeleine Vallieres of Canada, who secured the gold medal. Vallieres executed a decisive attack on the final climb, leaving her competitors behind. Alongside Fisher-Black, she had been part of a breakaway group that included Spanish cyclist Mavi Garcia as they approached the finish.
As the riders navigated the hilly terrain of the Kigali circuit, Vallieres surged ahead on the cobblestones, demonstrating exceptional power and speed. She crossed the finish line with a substantial lead of 23 seconds, marking a historic win as Canada’s first road champion in this category.
Fisher-Black, 22 years old, put forth an impressive effort throughout the race and managed to maintain her position in the leading group until the final moments. Her strong performance highlights her growing prominence in the cycling world, especially on the international stage.
