Police Seek Public Help in Search for Missing 11-Year-Old Boy

An 11-year-old boy, Kai Pavlovic, has gone missing in British Columbia, prompting an urgent search effort by local authorities. The Burnaby Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that they are working “around the clock” to locate him, as his family based in New Zealand expresses serious concerns for his safety.
The RCMP issued an appeal for information on Thursday, following a request for a wellbeing check on September 26, 2023. Police have indicated that they believe Kai may be staying with a caretaker who has not been identified by authorities. In their ongoing investigation, officers have engaged with Kai’s family members and pursued various leads, though they have not yet confirmed his whereabouts.
The initial priority for the police was to raise awareness about Kai’s disappearance and share his photograph with the public. A spokeswoman stated, “Our investigators are making every effort to find Kai and we are asking for the public’s help as part of those ongoing efforts.” She urged anyone with information regarding Kai’s location or caretaker to contact local police to ensure his safety.
In response to community inquiries regarding the absence of an Amber Alert, the Burnaby RCMP clarified that such alerts are only activated in confirmed abduction cases where there is imminent danger to the child. The current information does not meet those criteria, they explained.
The family of Kai, who has been residing in Canada for the past year, has had limited contact with relatives overseas. Concern for his wellbeing was raised by family members related to his deceased father, which ultimately led to the request for a welfare check.
A crowdfunding page on Givealittle was established to support Kai’s family in Christchurch, reflecting their growing alarm. It noted, “All attempts to ensure Kai’s wellbeing have failed,” with family members now traveling to Canada in hopes of assisting in the search for answers.
According to a spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), they are aware of the situation regarding the missing child. The MFAT confirmed that their high commission in Ottawa has provided initial support to a family member of Kai. They emphasized that details regarding assistance can be found on the SafeTravel website but would not disclose further information due to privacy concerns.
As the search continues, police remain dedicated to finding Kai and are calling on the community to help in any way they can. The family and authorities are hopeful for a positive outcome as the investigation unfolds.
