Search Efforts Continue for Missing Man off Whangarei Coast
The search for a second man who went missing off the coast of Whangarei is set to resume on the morning of March 15, 2024. The man was one of two individuals aboard a boat that failed to return to Pataua South, located east of Whangarei, as scheduled at 19:00 on Friday.
Early on Saturday, the vessel was discovered adrift with no occupants onboard. Shortly thereafter, a member of the public located the body of one of the missing men in the water. This prompted an immediate response from search and rescue teams, including the Police Dive Squad and volunteers from both Coastguard Tūtūkākā and Coastguard Whangarei. Despite extensive efforts throughout the day, the search for the second individual has not yielded results.
Ongoing Search Operations
Authorities have mobilized significant resources to locate the missing man. Search and rescue crews have been scouring the area since the boat was found. The challenging conditions and vast expanse of water have complicated their efforts.
According to the local police, the search operations will continue at first light. “We are committed to finding the second individual and are utilizing all available resources,” a police spokesperson stated. The search teams are hopeful that the improved visibility during daylight hours will aid their mission.
Local community members have expressed their concerns and support for the families involved. As the search continues, many are rallying around those affected, providing assistance and comfort during this distressing time.
As the situation develops, updates will be provided by local authorities. The police urge anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward.
