Search Intensifies for Missing Hiker in Kahurangi National Park
Police have intensified their search for a missing hiker in the Kahurangi National Park on New Zealand’s South Island. Graham Garnett, a 66-year-old man, was last seen while tramping in the Baton/Ellis River area. He was expected to return on December 30, 2023, but has not been heard from since.
According to Jonny Evans, a sergeant with the New Zealand Police Search and Rescue team, Garnett’s disappearance is concerning. “The conditions in the park can be challenging, and we are doing everything we can to locate him,” Evans stated during a press briefing.
Garnett is described as approximately 177 centimeters tall, weighing around 100 kilograms, and has grey hair. Search efforts began shortly after he was reported missing, involving a coordinated response from local search and rescue teams. In addition to ground searches, aerial surveillance has also been conducted to cover more difficult terrain.
The search operation has faced challenges due to the rugged landscape and unpredictable weather conditions in the park. Search teams are utilizing both volunteers and specialized equipment to assist in the effort. As the days pass, the urgency to find Garnett increases, with family and friends expressing their concerns for his safety.
Authorities urge anyone who may have seen Garnett or has information about his whereabouts to come forward. The New Zealand Police are committed to continuing their search until Garnett is found. They have also expressed gratitude for the support from local communities and volunteers who have joined the search efforts.
As the search continues, the local community remains hopeful for a positive outcome. The police have indicated that updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
