Search Intensifies for Missing Tramper Roy Arbon in New Zealand
The search for Roy Arbon, a 75-year-old tramper who went missing in New Zealand, continues to be a major concern nearly a week after his disappearance. Arbon was last seen leaving his home in Rūnanga on July 23, 2023. The following day, his phone transmitted a location signal that has since become central to the ongoing search efforts.
Aerial Searches Reveal No Sign of Arbon
On July 24, at approximately 14:39 local time, Arbon’s mobile phone automatically sent out a location signal, placing him in a clearing. This transmission occurred about two hours after he was reported missing. Despite extensive aerial searches conducted shortly thereafter, including video footage captured just 12 minutes after the signal, no evidence of Arbon was found in the area.
The New Zealand Police have noted that Arbon’s phone has not shown any activity since that day. His disappearance has raised concerns among family and friends, who are anxiously awaiting updates. As a former recovery worker from the Erebus disaster and with a notable past as an accidental international drug smuggler, Arbon’s life experiences add a complex layer to the ongoing investigation.
Community Support and Search Efforts
Local authorities, alongside volunteers, have mobilized to assist in the search for Arbon. The community has come together, showing solidarity and support for his family during this difficult time. Search operations have focused on the area around the last recorded location of his phone, employing both aerial and ground search teams.
Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding Arbon’s whereabouts or who may have seen him on or after July 23 to come forward. In a statement, the New Zealand Police emphasized the importance of community input in solving the case and bringing closure to Arbon’s family.
As the search continues, the hope remains that Roy Arbon will be found safe. The police have assured the public that they are doing everything possible to locate him and will keep the community updated as new information becomes available.
