Severe Weather Alert: Taranaki and Tararua Face Heavy Rain

Heavy rain is forecasted to hit parts of New Zealand’s North Island, prompting severe weather warnings for several regions. The MetService has issued an orange heavy rain warning for both the Taranaki region and the Tararua Range, with expected rainfall totals reaching up to 220mm in Taranaki Maunga and 160mm in the Tararua Range. The warnings are in effect until early Tuesday morning.
In addition to these areas, heavy downpours are anticipated along the Kāpiti Coast. Reports indicate that approximately 11mm of rain fell in Paraparaumu within the last hour. Residents in the affected regions are urged to stay vigilant and prepare for potential flooding and related hazards.
The heavy rain is part of a broader weather pattern affecting the North Island. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and advising the public to heed local forecasts and weather alerts.
As rain continues to fall, the impacts on local infrastructure and communities are being assessed. Emergency services are on standby to respond to any incidents that may arise as conditions worsen.
The public is reminded to take precautions, especially when driving or engaging in outdoor activities, as visibility may be significantly reduced and road conditions could become hazardous.
For those in Taranaki, the Tararua Range, and surrounding areas, staying informed through reliable sources such as RNZ and the MetService is crucial during this severe weather event.
